Sweating from the Groins:

Groin sweating can be a very distressing symptom in many people.

This is often effectively treated is by injecting a dilute solution of Botulinum Toxin into the skin of the groins. Using a very fine needle, approximately 20 injections are made in the groin - half in the skin crease at the top of the thigh and the other half in the skin on the upper inner thigh - this second area can be very tender.

The exact distribution of the injections is dictated by where the sweating occurs from. No anaesthetic is usually needed and the whole process takes 20 minutes.

The Botulinum Toxin binds to the nerve that control sweating in the skin, and reduces all sweating in the area for 4 – 12 months. Clinical studies have shown this treatment reduces the amount of sweating by 3 - 4 times. A first course usually lasts 4 – 9 months, with subsequent courses being more effective and lasting 6 – 12 months per time.

The groin area can be very sensitive and if the area needing injection is between the legs, a brief general anaesthetic/heavy sedation is recommended.

This is not a common area to be treated, but the few patients who have requested it have had some very good results.
